The Unique Charm of the Sassi of Matera
The Sassi (stones) of Matera are dwellings carved into the limestone rock of the ravine, divided into two districts facing each other: the Sasso Baresano, which looks towards Bari, and the Sasso Caveoso, which rests on the ravine of Matera.
The visitor, at the first sight of the city, is suspended on the belvedere panaroma. Before their eyes there are the Sassi, clinging to the rock, leaning against each other, between alleys, stairways, roofs, and stone balconies and in the background the ravine, a great crack in the earth. The area is dotted with rock churches.
