The five colorful villages overlooking the sea
Monterosso is the most easily accessible village, and it offers visitors a large town full of typical shops, excellent restaurants and incredible wine bars where you can taste the famous sciacchetrà liqueur. Its beaches are wider than the other 4 villages, following the course of the small gulf on which the town stretches, offering sunbathers a marvelous soft pebbled beach on which to lay their towels.
Vernazza is a romantic village of colorful houses located between a small promontory and a natural harbor in the shape of a semicircle. The few here beaches are narrow and stony but contain an extraordinary beauty.
Corniglia is located on top of a hill in an incomparable panoramic position. The sea can be reached via captivating paths and stairways, as well as via the normal asphalted road, and it is surrounded by vineyards overlooking the sea.
Riomaggiore follows the shape of the mountains, going up and down in V-form along the coast. It overlooks a rocky shore and offers truly enchanting scenery. On summer evenings, walks and outdoor events here have a magical flavor.
Manarola, is perched on a rocky promontory and descends towards the sea with its colorful houses. Manarola, together with Corniglia, is one of the smallest villages of Cinque Terre.
Geographically, Cinque Terre is located on a ridge that separates the Val di Vara from the Gulf of La Spezia. They are very high, steep hills, covered with dense vegetation and finishing off in the sea between craggy promontories and rocks.
The coves inset in this landscape have a unique charm and are generally made of stones or gravel. The climate is milder than the rest of Liguria, favored by warm currents that periodically touch the coast.
The entire area is protected thanks to the establishment of the Cinque Terre National Park and the Cinque Terre Marine Reserve.
Cinque Terre offers the visitor exceptional local products. The natural land provides this territory with grapevines, olive trees, citrus fruits, and fruit trees often arranged on special terraces. The typical products from Cinque Terre are white wines made from Bosco, Albarola, Trebbiano or Vermentino grapes; olives, the basis of an excellent olive oil; and lemon extracts. Of course, basil, the soul of “Ligurian pesto”, is another flagship product of this Riviera.
Another typical peculiarity of the Cinque Terre is honey production. Beekeeping has been practiced on these hills for centuries and bees are fed with citrus and acacia flowers. Acacia honey is the main product of the villages and goes well with the excellent chestnuts and cheeses of the Val di Vara behind. In the end, Cinque Terre carries with it the heredity of the culture of this valley, from which many of the inhabitants started arriving at the beginning of the Middle Ages.
